Ch. 2 Sociological Investigation

Today’s Coming Attractions!!!  How you can scientifically answer a question!  How you can know if one thing caused another?  Mystery: Why does something work when it does not work?

How to scientifically answer a question!  What makes Sociology a science?  What is the difference between Sociology (or science) and common sense?

Question: Is distance learning or classroom learning the best?  Population  Sample  Hypothesis  Variables Dependent & Independent  Measuring variables Reliability & validity

Research designs to answer the question  Observational Participant observation Secondary analysis Case study  Surveys Used to study what we can not see directly Open & closed ended questions  Experiments

How can you know if one thing caused another?  If two things are related did they cause each other?  What do you need to know to say one thing caused another?

Big idea you can use!  When you hear data like “9 out of 10 doctors recommend”, or “Everyone thinks …”, etc.  Ask yourself: How did they get the data? What group did they study? How did they measure the variables?

Mystery: Why does something work when it does not work?  Placebo effect
