Bienvenidos World Languages 1 st Trimester, 2011

Description Students will learn Spanish through listening, speaking, reading and writing. The goal is meaningful communication, both oral and written.

National Standards Students will practice and master the Five National Standards goals of language study: -

Communication Communicate in Languages other than English Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions. Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language in a variety of topics. Standard 1.3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.

Cultures Gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures Standard 2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied Standard 2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studied.

Connections Connect with other disciplines and acquire information Standard 3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language Standard 3.2: Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the foreign language and its cultures

Comparison Develop insight into the nature of language and culture Standard 4.1: Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own Standard 4.2: Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparison of the cultures studied and their own

Communities Participate in multicultural communities at home and around the world Standard 5.1: Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting Standard 5.2: Students show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using the language for personal enjoyment and enrichment

Student Learning Goals Listening: Students will listen to and understand the target language Speaking: Students will speak in the target language and be understood by others Reading: Students will read and understand the target Writing: Students will write in the target language and be understood by others

Grading Grades will be proficiency-based on the student learning goals for: Listening20% Speaking25% Reading20 % Writing25% Vocabulary10% Classroom attendance and active participation are of vital importance if a student is to learn Grades are based on formative and summative assessments, which are designed to measure what a student knows and is able to do in the target language.

Classroom Expectations Come to class prepared to work Strive for excellence in all that you do Listen, repeat/respond Be respectful to others in the classroom Be positive Be appropriately resourceful Be on time Be ready to actively participate Listen when others speak (including the teacher) If in doubt, ask for help Bring water but leave soda, food or candy outside the classroom Turn off and stow electronic devices before entering the classroom

Get Involved There will be many opportunities for parents and students to further their involvement in the World Languages program. Some of these may include: Spanish Club Spanish Field Trips, ie. Tacoma Art Museum for Día de los Muertos Trips to Spanish speaking countries, ie. Costa Rica, Spain, Ecuador
