 It is the eve of Lucie’s wedding day.  She spends her last maiden hours sitting with her father.  Lucie asks once more if her father is absolutely certain that he embraces her marriage.  Manette replies that he wants Lucie to marry and has often feared that she would waste away her life on his account.

 For the first time since the trial, Manette mentions his period of suffering.  He acknowledges that if Lucie was not to marry, his unhappy dark would impact her life.

Manette recalls the years of his captivity, when he wondered whether his child survived, whether it was a boy who would one day avenge his father’s wrongful imprisonment or a daughter who would marry, never knowing her father existed…

 Or a daughter who would raise her children to know their grandfather’s plight…  Or a daughter who he could see in the moonlight but could never hold in his arms…

 Lucie struggles to understand her father  Manette asserts that she would have to live the life of a lonely prisoner to understand Considering the thoughts Manette reveals in his conversation with Lucie, what are his fears?

 Lucie enters Manette’s room during the overnight hours to find him peacefully sleeping.  She kisses his head and vows to remain a loyal daughter.

Lucie and Miss Pross are ready to commence the ceremony but Manette and Darnay are speaking behind closed doors. Recall the promise from chapter 12.

 Lorry and Pross recall Lucie’s childhood days with tears in their eyes, moments before the wedding.

 Lorry promises to care for Manette while Lucie and Charles are away on their honeymoon. He even vows to take time away from Tellson’s.

Manette and Darnay come out and Lorry notices Manette looks deathly pale, similar to the state he was in in the garret.

 Manette is able to compose himself through the wedding in fulfillment of his promise to support Lucie’s happiness.

 Manette kisses Lucie before the newlyweds depart for the 2-week honeymoon. He tells Darnay,“Take her, Charles! She is yours!”

 Manette appears ill upon returning to the home in Soho. Lorry and Pross decide it is best to leave him alone for a while.

 Pross and Lorry return to find Mantte making shoes.

“It’s a young lady’s walking shoe,” he mumbled without looking up at him. “I should have finished it a long time ago. Leave it alone.” Does Manette’s use of shoemaking as a distraction parallel any other character’s intensive work?

 Lorry and Pross agree that Manette’s behavior must be kept secret, especially from Lucie.  Lorry takes an extended leave from the bank to watch over Manette, but the only thing that appears to be improving is Manette’s ability to make shoes.  Nine nights pass and still Manette’s behavior is yet to cease.
