Presentation transcript:

Innovations in Equality and Diversity Training Emma Strafford Staff Learning and development Manager – HMP Morton Hall Emma Milne Senior Officer Diversity Manager

Why is Diversity Training important?  More than just complying with the law  Making every staff member, partnership worker and customer feel included, valued and respected  Promotes awareness and sets out expectations of what behaviour is acceptable and the standards of the organisation

‘Traditional’ training methods  Taught classroom based learning  Online assessment  Text book with written exam  Presentation with no review/evaluation

What makes the difference?  Bringing Diversity to life – make it ‘real’ and relating to the working and social environment  Encourage people to challenge pre- conceptions and see differences between cultures as a strength rather than a weakness

What makes the difference?  Making links within the community – engagement, inclusion and cohesion  Celebration of events in an appropriate manner taking into account the wishes of the celebrants

Celebrating events  Chinese New Year  Summer carnival  Black History Month  Guest speakers from different cultures

Making Diversity work for you  Better cultural understanding – can create workplace harmony  Making people feel that their contribution is valued  Can create better links with the community and suppliers

Any questions? Thank you for your time and participation
