3 KEY FACTORS OF CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT 1.Select consistent model for managing and discipline of students 2.Organize the environment- how students are seated, where materials are located 3.Manage student behavior- guidelines must be chosen and explained to students. Clear expectations help create a safe learning environment

Create positive learning environment- a. develop positive student-teacher relationships b. focus student attention on correct behavior by helping students be responsible for their behavior, encouraging students involvement, and model correct behaviors c. provide students with feedback and encouragement d. provide opportunities for diverse learners

5 5. Manage instruction- lessons may need organization; teacher must plan in advance to decide how the lesson will be taught and how students will be held accountable for their learning 6. Promote safety- students need to feel safe to fully engage in learning activities, handling conflicts and discipline in positive and nurturing manner contribute to students’ perception of safety

6 BUILDING A LEARNING COMMUNITY Student misbehavior is lessened when students are actively involved in their classroom and their learning. Classrooms that provide student involvement are called learning communities. A learning community is a classroom that: provides students with support, allows students to take risks, and encourages students to help one another. Is designed to help students feel respected, safe, and valued in order to help them be open to learning new skills

7 To create a learning community, teachers may: Design lessons that allow for cooperative learning activities Provide activities that allow students to produce something, independently or in a group Provide a method for students to assess themselves Burder, Paul, and Cooper, James.(2004).
