 Per Capita Water Availability  1951: 5177 Cubic Meters per Annum  2001: 1869 Cubic Meters per Annum  2025: 1341 Cubic Meters per Annum  2050: 1140 Cubic Meters per Annum  There is a rapid increase in demand for water in various sectors  2000 – 634 Cu.m per person  2025 – 822 Cu.m per person

One of Eight Missions under National Action Plan for Climate Change (NAPCC) OBJECTIVE: Conservation of water, minimizing wastage and ensuring its more equitable distribution both across and within States through integrated water resources development and management. NBQUE Action: Formation of NBQUE (National Bureau of Water Use Efficiency)

Irrigation – accounts for about 80% of water use WUE = Conveyance Efficiency (65-70%) x On farm Application Efficiency (55-65%) Surface Irrigation : WUE ≈ 35-45% Groundwater Irrigation:WUE ≈ 55-65%

- Distribution loss ≈ 20% (Non-revenue water) - Tremendous scope for saving in water use INDUSTRIAL WATER SUPPLY - Higher water footprint in industrial processes - Emphasis on recycle & reuse of treated water

 About 2.17 Lakh (villages) rural population affected with water quality problems.  Developmental activities also have contributed significant pollution load in freshwater systems.  Uniform Water Quality Monitoring Protocol notified and Circulated to States & other agencies for adoption.  Directions have been issued to Constitute WQRC (Water Quality Review Committee) & Finalise WQMP (Water Quality Management Plan).  Areas identified for polluted River stretch and their remediation.

 Appropriate practices for water conservation and artificial recharge to ground water need to be implemented in participatory mode involving stakeholders.  The MoWR has prepared a draft master plan for artificial recharge of ground water in different hydro-geological terrains, and evolved area-specific feasible recharge structures & their designs.

ScenarioVolume of waste water (M cubic m) Est. irrigated area (ha) Using 75% of the treated Waste Water 1,070130,000 Treating 50% of collected Waste Water 4,850600,000

 Basin Planning Approach for Water Quality Management.  River Aquifer interaction.  Minimum Environmental Flow of Rivers.  Land-use pattern and regulation by States.
