President, VP and Advisors Cabinet Agencies

Read scenario #1 on page 10 of your study guide. Offices? Departments?

Independent agencies have been formed for numerous reasons, including: being assigned a task or function that does not fit well within the existing departmental structure. protecting the agency’s purposes from the influence of both partisan and pressure politics. being created outside the departmental structure by accident. They may work with, but not for, a department. Three types of agencies.

As important/powerful as a department, but don’t have department status. Perform an administrative task within the executive branch. Examples include NASA, the EPA, the Social Security Administration, FEMA and FDIC.

Beyond the reach of the President. Have regulatory responsibilities. Examples include the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Government corporations were established by Congress to carry out certain business- like activities. There are now over 50 government corporations, including the U.S. Postal Service, Amtrak, and the Tennessee Valley Authority.

FEMA mission statement: to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards. What do they need in Washington, IL? Develop a list.
