Tuesday, June 1 st, 2004 FOCUS: The heart is a muscular pump that circulates blood. Blood is rich in proteins. Blood is a tissue that consists of: cells (white & red), proteins, platelets, water and minerals, and wastes such as urea and carbon dioxide. TOPIC: STRUCTURE OF THE HEART ACTIVITY 1.Turn in old journals from 5/24-5/27 (No journal for the 28 th ) 2.Update point sheets (add 3 items( 3.Finish lab 11-2: Heart structure in other animlas a. Show finished hearts to Mr. Shoub and explain blood flow in each b. Finish lab sheet for homework. Everyone does a lab sheet! HOMEWORK: READING ANALYSIS 11:4 DUE TOMORROW.

Wednesday, June 2 nd, 2004 FOCUS: Several diseases affect the cardiovascular system. Atherosclerosis is the narrowing of the arteries due to deposits of fatty plaque. Plaques is composed of cholesterol and saturated fat. Narrow arteries require more pressure to move blood through them. This raises the blood pressure and heart hare. Higher pressure damages the artery walls and can damage the kidneys too. TOPIC: HEART STRUCTURE ACTIVITY 1.Turn in reading analysis 11:4 2.Finish lab Check your three heart models with Mr. Shoub. Everyone should turn in a completed worksheet. 3.Go over pages 10 and 11 in the packet. HOMEWORK: FINISH PAGES 10 AND 11. THE CHAPTER 11 TEST WILL BE ON FRIDAY. STAMP SHEETS AND PACKETS WILL BE COLLECTED

Thursday, Jun. 3 rd, 2004 FOCUS: In this unit, we have studied the heart, blood flow, and diseases of the heart. In our next “mini-unit”, we will look at how the lungs supply oxygen to the blood, and how the kidneys clean the blood. Due to lack of time, we will only cover the essential details of the lungs and kidneys. TOPIC: REVIEW ACTIVITY 1.Check pages 10 and 11 in the packet. Stamp sheets. 2.Turn in your heart lab Work on pages in the packet with your team. REMINDERS/HOMEWORK: FINISH PAGES 12-15, DUE TOMORROW. POINT SHEETS WILL BE COLLECTED TODAY. STAMP SHEETS WILL BE COLLECED TOMORROW. TEST ON CHAPTER 11 TOMORROW

Friday, June 4 th, 2004 FOCUS: The lungs do not contain any muscles. They cannot pull in or push out air by themselves. How is it that we are able to inhale and exhale? What allows us to breathe? TOPIC: CIRCULATION UNIT TEST ACTIVITY: 1.Turn in your journals for this week. 2.Turn in your point sheet and bonus passes if you still haven’t done so. 3.Test on Circulation Unit. 4.Turn in your unit packet and stamp sheet today. REMINDERS/HOMEWORK: WORK ON THE REVIEW PACKET PAGES 1-6.
