1 The Circulatory System
The circulatory system is also known as the cardiovascular system. It consists of… 1. Blood 2. Blood Vessels 3. The Heart The three main types of blood vessels are arteries, veins and capillaries.

2 KNOWLEDGE CHECK Name the type of blood vessel which has valves?
Statement Arteries Veins Capillaries Carry blood at high pressure Usually carry blood with a high oxygen concentration Allow substances to pass through their walls into cells Have valves Carry blood away from organs Have walls which are one cell thick Are in close contact with cells of the body Have a thick muscular wall Pick up oxygen from the alveoli in the lungs Usually carry blood rich in carbon dioxide to the heart Supply the heart muscle with oxygen

3 ANSWERS Statement Arteries Veins Capillaries
Carry blood at high pressure Y Usually carry blood with a high oxygen concentration Allow substances to pass through their walls into cells Have valves Carry blood away from organs Have walls which are one cell thick Are in close contact with cells of the body Have a thick muscular wall Pick up oxygen from the alveoli in the lungs Usually carry blood rich in carbon dioxide to the heart Supply the heart muscle with oxygen

4 Heart structure and function
What is the structure of the heart? What pathway does blood follow through the heart?,

5 Lesson Objectives Identify the location of each section of the heart
Describe the functions of atria, ventricles and valves Describe the pathway of blood through the heart Today’s keywords Double circulation, pulmonary circuit, systemic circuit, heart

6 HWK: Heart structure and function
TASKS: Label specific locations and summarise their functions (atria/aorta/pulmonary vein/vena cava) Colour the heart showing oxygenated and deoxygenated blood flow

7 Tasks for today Target grade Activities Grade C (or lower)
Identify the location of each section of the heart Describe the functions of atria, ventricles and valves Explain difference between oxygenated and deoxygenated blood Grade B Complete grade C work Describe the pathway of blood through the heart Grade A Complete grade B & C work Explain the double circulatory system identifying sections that contain oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.

8 Circulatory system The body relies upon the circulatory system to transport oxygen and nutrients (substances providing nourishment) to the cells in the body (via oxygenated blood, whilst also extracting waste and carbon dioxide via deoxygenated blood away from the cells. The heart pumps, red oxygen rich blood to each part of the body. Blue, oxygen-poor blood returns from the body to the heart. It then travels through the lungs where carbon dioxide (CO2) is exchanged for new oxygen.

9 Task: Label your diagram
Add arrows to show direction of blood around each circuit Use colour to show oxygenated and deoxygenated blood

10

11 From Body From Lungs Copy into book To Body To Lungs

12 Describe the functions of atria, ventricles and valves

13 Plenary questions (1a) The list gives some structures in the blood and circulatory system. heart artery red blood cell ventricle capillary plasma vein white blood cell platelets Which of these structures (i) destroys bacteria? (ii) carries carbon dioxide? (iii) pumps blood around the body? (iv) carries blood to organs? (v) carries blood from organs? (vi)carries oxygen?   (1b) Name the type of blood vessel which has valves.

14 ANSWERS (1a) Which of these structures
(i) destroys bacteria? White blood cells (ii) carries carbon dioxide? plasma (iii) pumps blood around the body? heart (iv) carries blood to organs? artery (v) carries blood from organs? veins (vi) carries oxygen? Red blood cells   (1b) Name the type of blood vessel which has valves. veins

15 HWK To revise Circulatory System as you will have a TEST next lesson.
