1. Juan Ponce de Leon - Spanish explorer who traveled through Florida in 1513 looking for the “fountain of youth.”

2. Hernando de Soto - Spanish explorer who sailed around Florida in 1539 and then traveled along the southeast coast as far as the Mississippi River

3.Robert La Salle - French explorer who sailed down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in 1682, reaching the Gulf of Mexico.

4. St. Augustine - city on the coast of eastern Florida, founded by the Spanish in 1565.

5. Roanoke Island - Island in present-day North Carolina along the Outer Banks where the English tried but failed to establish a colony in 1857, which was called the “Lost Colony.”

6. Jamestown, Virginia - Village that was the first permanent English settlement in North America, on the James River in Virginia

7. Thomas Jefferson - Virginian who wrote the Declaration of Independence, served as the third President of the United States, and purchased the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803.

8. Monticello - Home of Thomas Jefferson, located near Charlottesville, Virginia.

9. James Madison - Important delegate at the Constitutional Convention who later served as the fourth President of the United States.

10. Andrew Jackson - Seventh President of the United States, who was born in present-day South Carolina and was very popular with the common people
