3 Who am I? Led the struggle to give women equal rights, including the right to vote.

4 Who am I? French explorer of North America (Canada.) Motivated by a desire to colonize the new world. Explored the St. Lawrence River near Quebec Canada and gave France a North American claim.

5 Who am I? African American who studies science and plants. He became a teacher. He developed hundreds of uses for peanuts, sweet potatoes, and soybeans.

6 Who am I? Explorer honored in October. Sailed across Atlantic for Spain to find western sea route to Asia. First European to discover sea route to America. Discovered “New World.”

7 Who am I? A wise leader. Proved that electricity was present in lightning through his kite experiment. He started the first library and the first volunteer fire department in America.

8 Who am I? Born in Virginia and became the third president of the United States. Wrote the Declaration of Independence, which states that people have certain rights. He was a leader who helped develop our country.

9 Who am I? Overcame disabilities and worked to help others who were blind and deaf.

10 Who am I? He was born in a log cabin and taught himself how to read. Became a United States President. Known as “Honest Abe.” Was United States President when the country was divided over the issue of equality for all people. Helped free African American slaves.

11 Who am I? A lawyer who defended people at a time when all people did not have equal rights. He was the first African American justice of the United States Supreme Court.

12 Who am I? Helped settle Jamestown colony, first permanent English settlement in North America. He was motivated by a desire to discover riches, to find a western sea route to Asia, and to colonize Virginia. Arrived at present day Jamestown. Made four additional voyages bringing more people to Jamestown. One of the first Europeans to reach the fall line of the James River.

13 Who am I? African American civil rights activist. She refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white passenger, as was required by law many years ago. Helped bring about changes in laws and worked so that all people would have equal rights.

14 Who am I? An Indian girl who was a helper and friend to the settlers in Jamestown.

15 Who am I? Spanish explorer of North America. Sought to discover riches and land to conquer. He was the first European to land in Florida (near St. Augustine) and gave Spain a North American claim.

16 Who am I? The first African American player in the major leagues of baseball. His actions helped bring about other opportunities for African Americans.

17 Who am I? A woman believed to have sewn one of the first flags for our country.

18 Who am I? Born in Virginia and was a farmer. Became a brave leader of soldiers. The first president of the United States, known as “the Father of Our Country.” Honored on Presidents’ Day observed in February. Worked under the republican form of government. Helped put the basic principles into practice for the new nation.
