1) More loyalists in the South that the British thought would help them

2) The British expected the slaves to join the British army

3) The British had troops in the West Indies they thought could help out in the South

Battle of Charles Town was a huge colonial defeat – worst defeat of the war for the Patriots 5,000 Patriot troops are forced to surrender
