Growing popularity and tension Great multitudes = heightened tension Jesus performs miraclesJohn 20:30 Jesus gains great fameMatthew 4:24-25 Jesus exposes sinMatthew 12:30-34; Jn. 7:7 Jesus proclaims His deityJohn 4;25-26 Jesus experiences hostilityMark 3:5-6; Lk. 11:53-54; Jn. 7:1 Tension mounts as the cross grows closer!

Jesus travels to Judea Feast of tabernacles at hand (Jn. 7:2-12). Luke records more details of Jesus’ trip to Judea (Luke 9:51-56). Upon arival in Jerusalem Jesus began to teach (Jn. 7:14- 52). Jesus speaks openly of his deity and mission on this earth (7:26). Jesus travels to the Mount of Olives (Jn. 8:1). Jesus teaches in the temple the next day (Jn. 8:1-11). Jesus preaches sermon on being the “Light of the World” (Jn. 8:12-59).

Points of interest in the sermon: Sin has separated the Jews from God (Jn. 8:21-23; 40-45). Truth lovers alone will be those who are recognized as Jesus’ disciples (Jn. 8:31-32). Jesus reveals his deity (Jn. 8:46-47; 56-58) Consequences of such preaching was hostility (Jn. 8:59).

Sermon of the good shepherd John 10:1-21 reveals the sermon on the good shepherd. Between John 10:22 and 10:23 there is a three month period (time between the feast of Tabernacles and feast of Dedication). John does not tell us what happened during that three months but Luke does (cf. Lk. 10:1-20).

9 events between feast (3 months) Jesus sends out the 70 to preach (Lk. 10:1-20). Jesus tells the parable of the good Samaritan (Lk. 10:25-37). Jesus answers a request on the part of one of the disciples regarding prayer (Lk. 11:1-13). Jesus agresively rebukes the scribes, Pharisees and Lawyers (Luke 11:37-54). Jesus teaches His disciples not to fear man (Lk. 12:1-12). Jesus preaches the parable of the rich fool (Lk. 12:13-21). Jesus preaches on earthly anxiety (Lk. 12:22-34). Jesus preaches the parable of the barren fig tree (Lk. 13:1-9). Jesus heals a woman on the Sabath day (Lk. 13:10-21).

Jesus at the feast of Dedication (Jn. 10:22-33) At the end of the feast of Dedication Jesus goes to Perea (Jn. 10:40-42; Lk. 13:31-35).

Geography covered

Conclusion Jesus continues to perform signs (Luke 11:14). Jesus continues to gain a following (Luke 12:1). Proclaim His deity (John 8:58). Rebuke sin (John 7:7) Experience hostility (John 7:1, 59)
