Citations

All specific, non- common knowledge must be cited: –Don’t cite: Henry VIII had six wives –CITE: Henry’s wife Anne Boleyn was critical in the emerging English Reformation –Don’t cite: Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector after the Civil War –CITE: Oliver Cromwell was a MP for Huntington in 1628

What must be cited: 1. Direct quotes –Put note at the end of the sentence, not the quote 2. Paraphrases 3. Specific examples, information If you didn’t know it before, CITE.

Proper citation Basic citation: Author. Title (Place of Publication: Publisher, date) p. X. p. = 1 page (e.g., p. 3) pp. = >1 page (e.g., pp. 3-5)

For a translated work: Original Author. Title, ed. and trans. by Translator (Place of Publication: Publisher, date) p. X. For an anonymous work: Title, ed. and trans. by Translator (Place of Publication: Publisher, date) p. X.

Subsequent citations: Author’s Last Name, Shortened Title, p. X. For edited / translated works: Author’s Last Name, Shortened Title, p. X. For anonymous edited / translated works: Shortened Title, p. X.

Other info… There should be at least one citation per paragraph (excluding intro, conclusion) 4+ footnotes per page is not excessive If there are no citations, I will not accept the paper. If citations do not follow proper Chicago style, then there will be a 10 point penalty.

Quotations Use a direct quote only when: –The quote is significant –The quote is eloquent ALWYAS analyze / explain the quote. The quote must be grammatically correct and have a lead in – never a stand-alone sentence Don’t end paragraphs with a quote.
