4 Review From Friday What is plagiarism? - copying text w/o quotes and citing source - paraphrasing text w/o citing source - using another student’s work Why do we need to cite our sources? How can we avoid plagiarism? - Anything we read, hear, put into our own words needs to be cited

5 What does it mean to cite your research? Show which book, web site, video, person, etc. you found the info from Example: Although it’s impossible to be accurate, the total people killed in the Armenian Genocide is between 800,000 – 1,500,000. Although it’s impossible to be accurate, “the total people killed in the Armenian Genocide is between 800,000 – 1,500,000” (Palmer 12). What’s different? - quotes “___” - Author and page # Incorrect

6 Practice makes perfect Write a sentence using a direct quote from the paragraph on your handout. In order for a genocide to happen, it “requires central planning and a machinery to implement it” (Palmer 13). Paraphrase a main point from the paragraph. Beginning in 1915, Armenians were tortured and murdered by the Ottoman Empire in Turkey. Their money and property was stolen by the government, and they were forced into the desert where most died of hunger and thirst (Palmer 13).

7 Remember... When citing a book, you need to include the author's (or authors’ if more than one) last name and page number where info was found. Palmer 13 Author Page Number
