In the 9 th century there were battles across England between the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.

In 871 the Vikings took over London. The city was destroyed.

Eventually the Saxon king Alfred the Great took London back.

For the next hundred years the river Lea was the boundary between Saxon land (to the west) and Viking land (to the east). Vikings Saxons (English) LONDON LEYTON

Leyton was on the front line, in the middle of the fighting.

In 894 Viking ships rowed up the Lea and built a fortress.

One year later the English attacked them but failed. So King Alfred built two fortresses lower down the river so the Vikings could not get their ships out.

About 100 years ago the remains of a Viking longboat was found near Lea Bridge. What might it have looked like?

YOUR TASK: Using the resources provided, make a Viking ship. RESOURCES: Plain paper, sugar paper, glue, scissors, sellotape, coloured pencils, information sheets.
