All – Arrange images in chronological order to show the main event of the battle Some – Describe the battle of Stamford Bridge in great detail Some – Analyse the battle and come to a decision on why the Vikings were defeated.

2 Recap! Both Harold Godwinson and Harald Hardrada wanted to be King of England. Write down two reasons why both men should be king!

3 Fearing that Edwin and Morcar would fail, King Harold marched north.
He had disbanded his army, so he gathered thousands of men during the march. It took them 5 days to march 185 miles.

4 After Fulford, Tostig and Hardrada exchanged hostages with York.
It was agreed that extra hostages would be handed over to them at Stamford Bridge. On 25th September, something unexpected happened – King Harold attacked!

6 Harold’s Army struggled to cross the bridge due to a large Viking warrior. He was taken out by a spear from beneath.

7 The Viking had arranged themselves in a shield wall for extra protection but this was eventually broken.

8 The two forces fought for hours, many Vikings felt misled – they expected the English to hate their new king.

9 Many Vikings fought without armour, it was very hot and they left it on their boats.

10 Eventually Hardrada was shot in the neck by an arrow
Eventually Hardrada was shot in the neck by an arrow. Tostig was also killed during the attack.

11 Out of 300 ships, only 24 returned to Norway.

12 GOT IT! You have been given a storyboard on the Battle of Stamford Bridge. There are some missing pieces, either pictures or writing which you must fill in to complete the story. Explain why Harald Hardrada lost the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Expert! What can we can learn from the fact that Hardrada and Tostig stayed in York and did not march South to London? How would the Battle of Stamford Bridge have given William, Duke of Normandy an advantage?
