2 Who Were The Vikings? AKA – Danes, Norsemen (Northmen)
Superb warriors, sailors, & shipbuilders Ships Long & narrow with carved, arched prows Could navigate shallow rivers to attack inland Ruled by kings & nobles, but were very democratic

3 Where Were They From? Scandinavia

4 Vikings Attack 800s – Drove into Eastern Europe
Sacked towns, destroyed churches, & defeated armies Primary Interest – Trade Used rivers to their advantage Helped revive trade after Dark Ages

5 Vikings Invade England
Invasion of England 871 & 876 – Alfred the Great attacks the Vikings & loses 886 – Vikings exhausted & sign peace treaty Can live in Merica & Northumbria Danes are pushed out of England 1013 – Vikings retake control of all of England 1016 – King Canute takes throne Unites England, Denmark, & Scandinavia

8 Who Were the Anglo-Saxons?
Originally 2 separate groups (Angles & Saxons) Replaced Romans in Britain in 450 A.D. Anglo-Saxon emerges as new culture Formed kingdoms – Northumbria, Merica, Wessex Kingdoms became governmental districts (shires) Governed by shire-reeve (Sheriff)

Took throne in 871 determined to drive out Vikings Made temporary peace after 1st failed attack Builds army & ships for 5 years before 2nd attack 886 – Signs treaty with Danes

10 Danish Rule 900s – Alfred’s successors regain some of land
Unified country, strengthened gov’t, spread Christianity Danes attack & control England by 1013 1042 Danish line dies out Replaced by Edward the Confessor

11 Norman Conquest 1066 – Edward dies with no heir
Anglo-Saxons refuse to recognize Norman ruler Choose Harold of Wessex instead Normans want to control England & attack Normans win, but Anglo-Saxons resist changes People are divided based on culture originally Eventually lifestyles, laws, & customs include elements of both
