3 Migration of people from present day Germany, Sweden, & Denmark to present day England The Anglo-Saxon Period was filled with constant fighting between different tribes Many tribes left their homelands due to the fighting Political, economic & cultural consequences Anglo-Saxon civilization established on island of Britain – 3 main tribes

4 The Anglo-Saxon Period: Invasions & Conversions Before the Germanic tribes arrived there were already tribes in Britain, including the Britons Roman armies conquered the Britons Romans introduced cities, stone roads, written scholarship, and Christianity. Romans abandoned Britain

5 The Anglo-Saxon Period: Invasions & Conversions Britain invaded by Germanic peoples Arthurian Legends arose trying to combat the invasion Germanic tribes organized themselves into a confederation, the Heptarchy Anglo-Saxon culture changed over time Went from seafarers who practiced pagan religion Became farmers who practiced Christianity The Anglo-Saxons were mainly a warrior culture Important values: strength, courage, loyalty Wyrd, or fate, was an important concept

6 The Anglo-Saxon Period: Religion Most Anglo-Saxons were Pagans until the middle of the 5 th Century when they were Christianized Pagans believed in many gods (___________________________) Paganism had a strong connection to nature Paganism involved many ceremonies and rituals Growth of Christianity Patrick converted Ireland, and they (the converted) colonized Scotland Augustine established a monastery at Canterbury Christianity spread to all of Britain by 690

8 The Anglo-Saxon Period: End of the A-S Period The Danish Invasions Danes (Vikings) attacked England, but Alfred the Great defeated them and forced them to accept Christianity. The Battle of Hastings took place in 1066 Two people claimed to be king of England William the Conqueror won, beginning the Medieval Period The Battle of Hastings
