The New Curriculum 2014

The lingo! Curriculum: course of study Statutory: required Non-statutory: not required KS1: Y1 and Y2 KS2: Y3, Y4, Y5, Y6

What is the national curriculum? A programme of study for children between the age of 5 – 16 A document that sets out the subjects and assessment for children from Year 1 to Year 11 First version was developed in the late 1980’s and been changed several times. Includes a list of compulsory subjects that all children must be taught

What subjects are taught from The National Curriculum at primary school? 12

From September 2014 primary schools had to implement big changes to the curriculum. Y1,Y3,Y4,Y5 are already being taught the “new” curriculum Y2 & Y6 changes will be implemented from September 2015

Why change? To raise standards To be more in line with higher achieving countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Finland To produce a productive, creative and well educated society

Some of the changes to Academic Learning More focus on vocabulary development, grammar, punctuation and spelling from Y1 Handwriting is expected to be fluent, legible and speedy Spoken English to be more advanced – debating and presentation skills to be taught 5 years olds expected to learn to count up to 100 (20) and learn number bonds to 20 (10) Simple fractions will be taught in KS1 By the age of 9 children should know all their times tables up to 12x12 No calculators will be used until end of KS2

Some of the changes to World Learning ICT From 5 children will learn to write and test simple programs and organise, store and retrieve data From 7 they will be taught to understand the internet Internet safety will be taught MFL A modern foreign language is compulsory from Year 3 PE Greater emphasis again on competitive sport, being active and healthy lifestyles

Big changes to topics taught in History & Geography and Science (Topic) Children are to be taught much more about England, London, The Queen and The British Empire Children should be taught history in chronological order. Go through the ages from stone age, bronze age, ancient greeks, ancient Egyptians, Romans, Normans, Anglo-Saxons, Victorians, WW2 In Year 6 children learn about Islamic Civilisation Children learn about key famous people in Black History throughout KS1 and KS2

What does a new curriculum mean for you and your kids? Refreshed topics Exciting learning Much more discovery and independent learning Expansion of general knowledge – more fact based Higher expectation in academic skills

Discovery Children are asked questions such as… Why can’t a meerkat live in the north pole? (Y1) What makes the earth angry? (Y3) Were the Vikings always Victorious and Vicious (Y6)
