Lecture 1: Course Outline and Objectives Prepared by Husam Al-Najar The Islamic University of Gaza- Environmental Engineering Department Environmental Measurements (EENV 4244)

Objectives of the course: The course aims to introduce the main and most useful measurements and laboratory test for the environmental engineer to identify the degree of pollution in water, wastewater, sludge, soil and atmosphere. Moreover, the sampling systems and the verification of results are involved in the context of the course. Text Book in order of importance: 1. Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, th edition 2. EPA Methods for chemical Analysis of Water and Wastewater 3. Methods of Soil Analysis, Chemical and Microbiological properties, 2 nd edition 4. Stanley E. Manahan, Fundamentals of Environmental Chemistry, 3 rd ed., Taylor & Francis/CRC Press, 2009

Course Outline 1. Collection and preservation of samples 2. Oxygen 2.1: Dissolved Oxygen (Do) 2.2: Biological Oxygen demand (BOD) 2.3: Chemical Oxygen demand (COD) 3. Determination of free chlorine and hypochlorite 4. Determination of Cations 4.1: Ammonia 4.2: Calcium 4.3: Calcium + Magnesium (hardness) 4.4: Sodium 5. Determination of Anions 5.1: Chloride 5.2: Nitrate Midterm Exam 6. Digestion of Samples: 6.1: Digestion of water samples with Kjeldhl method for determination of N 6.2: Destruction and extraction of soil and sludge for the determination of heavy metals 6.3: Destruction of plants and fish samples for the determination of heavy metals 7. Verification of Results 8. Quality assurance policy Final Exam Grading Policy: Midterm Exam 30% Participation and homework 10% Final Exam 60%
