2 C OURSE MODULE OBJECTIVES & OUTCOMES : Students who successfully complete this course will be able to: Understand mass balance and able to develop mass balance expression for contaminants/ materials under different case Learn how to characterize source water, and the best available technologies (BAT) for physical and chemical treatment of drinking water. Learn how to characterize wastewater, and the BAT for physical, chemical and biological treatment of wastewater. Determine common air pollutants, and their pathways, and the various technologies available for control. Learn the regulatory definitions of solid and hazardous wastes, and the methods used to characterize, handle wastes from their source to their final ultimate disposal or reuse. Understand selected contemporary global environmental issues such as global warming and emerging contaminants.

7 E NVIRONMENT : Environment is the aggregate of physical, chemical, biological and social components capable of causing direct or indirect effects in short or long term on living beings and human activities by “ United Nations of Conference of Env 1972, Stockholm, Sweden”

8 E NGINEERING The profession in which a knowledge of Mathematical and natural science gained by study, experience and practice is applied with judgment to develop way to utilize economically materials and forces of nature for the benefit of man kinds

9 E NVIRONMENTAL E NGINEERING Profession that applies mathematics and science to utilize the properties of matter and sources of energy in the solution of problems of environmental sanitation. These include: PROFESION OF SAFE, PALATABLE AND AMPLE PUBLIC WATER SUPPLIES THE PROPOER DISPOSAL OF A RECYCLE OF WASTEWATER AND SOLID WASTES THE ADEQUATE DRAINAGE OF URBAN AND RURAL AREAS FOR PROPOER SANITATION THE CONTROL OF WATER, SOIL AND ATOMPSPHERE POLLUTION AND SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF THESE SOLUTIONS
