Team Builder By: Ethan King

What is a Team?  A team is a group of individuals that are driven to accomplish the same goal. Teams I am in personally are the NJROTC Rifle Team, and NJROTC itself.

Team Motivation  To build a team you must motivate the members. Have social events that can build the relationships between everybody.  Our NJ unit holds a unit picnic and several other field trips to build cadet motivation. The cadets get to talking with each other and that builds relationships.  To build a team you must motivate the members. Team Conflict  Sometimes not everybody will get along in your group and this will lead to some conflict. As a leader you should help whoever is involved to reach an agreement with each other.  I haven’t seen much conflict this year myself from the unit but when it does happen it is important that it is reported to the SNSI/NSI.  Sometimes not everybody will get along in your group and this will lead to some conflict. As a leader you should help whoever is involved to reach an agreement with each other.  I haven’t seen much conflict this year myself from the unit but when it does happen it is important that it is reported to the SNSI/NSI.

Conflict Styles  The five conflict styles are avoiding, smoothing, competing, compromising, and collaborating. The style depends on the situation.

Confidence  A good leader will have confidence in their actions. He/she will not hesitate when confronted with an issue.  I have confidence in myself as a leader. If I didn’t have confidence I wouldn’t be able to give commands and participate in unit activities such as the AMI.  A good leader will have confidence in their actions. Character  A good leader will also have character. The leadership formula is strategy + character = leadership. A leader with good character leads by example.  When I am around my cadets I try to be the best example I can be.  A good leader will also have character. Respect  To earn the respect of your team you must act with honesty and integrity. Respect is also a two way street so you must give it as well.  I respect every cadet regardless of rank and position, however I expect respect back.  To earn the respect of your team you must act with honesty and integrity. Standards  Your teammates are always watching you, especially as a leader. You must hold yourself to a higher standard. This means doing nothing that could give you or your unit a bad name.

Composure  Keep your composure in every circumstance. A good leader keeps calm in the heat of battle or any other stress related incidents.  One time I was at a rifle meet and my shots weren't too good. I kept myself composed and ended up finishing the competition with a pretty good final score.  Keep your composure in every circumstance. Strategies to Refocus  Some strategies to refocus are to slow the pace, focus on the present, focus on the process, and show positive attitude. You need time to learn from a mistake and to reevaluate your process.

Enforcing  Sometimes as a leader you need to enforce your commands to your subordinates. They may not want to always listen.  I myself don’t have to enforce too much. That is more so the XO’s job. However, I still have to enforce certain commands.  Sometimes as a leader you need to enforce your commands to your subordinates. Encourage  Encouragement is the key to boosting an individuals confidence in their work. They will have the motivation to work harder.  I try to boost peoples confidence everyday by telling them they look good or giving them other complements.  Encouragement is the key to boosting an individuals confidence in their work. Discipline  Discipline is something you learn not give. It is for the good of you and your unit.  Having good discipline helped me at my workplace a lot. I didn’t complain or have a bad attitude.  Discipline is something you learn not give. It is for the good of you and your unit.  Having good discipline helped me at my workplace a lot. Commitment  If you care about something you will be committed to it. It is important that you be committed to the teams goals.  I was committed to the rifle team and tried to shoot my best at each competition.  If you care about something you will be committed to it. Stress Sometimes being a leader has its downs. Its very stressful so you must be able to handle the stress that comes with the position. I myself usually like to take time to relax and chill out to some music when I’m stressed.

Risk  Sometimes being a leader has its risk. You will have to change your plans and make adjustments to your schedule if necessary. I try to mark things on my calendar to remember.

Rewards  Being a leader has its rewards just as it has its risk. Being a good leader pays off in a lot of ways. You gain good experiences and it will better prepare you for future leader positions.  I feel as if I could confidently take a position of leadership in the future because of my experiences as CO.  Being a leader has its rewards just as it has its risk. Conclusion  In conclusion, leadership is about bettering yourself and the people that you lead over. It will have its rough patches and its benefits as well. How you lead is all about how you decide to approach the position.
