GOOD FASHION SAGE FRANCIS

MAIN MESSAGE The main message in the song “Good Fashion” is the corruption of modern society. That materialism and consumerism dictate our lives, prevents people from being unique/ true to themselves due to pressure to be accepted by others.

Sage Francis addresses the issues and problems with modern society and people, while acknowledging that he is a part of this “corrupt” society himself as he does not want to be an outsider. This shows that the pressure to conform creates conflict within ones self and the dishonesty within society.

LANGUAGE:

Metaphor: “Dark lenses tint the windows that are under my eyelids To hide from the light like I'm stuck in a fire pit" He opens the song in reference to his glasses; they're his blanket from the hell he sees. The song is about how he hides behind the tinted screens that protect him against both internal and external truths. Sage Francis is describing a hell on earth, the death of his innocence and inner sense. The glasses shield him from the truths of this corrupt modern society, while doubling as barrier that traps his opinions and true self inside.

Simile: “We’re acting like men of steel with a thin prtective shield” Showing how people pretend to be confident and indestructible when they are actually very insecure and hide behind their designer brands.

Repetition: “ Hell, its good fashion” In the lyrics, Sage Francis repetes this line many times as it has importance. This refers to his inability to explain why he feels the need to protect himself, which is referenced in the second verse "that can never make the final reel." Essentially, the sunglasses are his shield from hell, but "good fashion" is an easier excuse as he does not want to cause a conflict.

Sage Francis is a key and provocative figure in underground and independent rap, he is known for his controversial lyrics and as an outspoken artist, unafraid to speak his mind. His songs and opinions are very similar to the beat poets. The Beat Poets were revolutionary people who used literature and performance to get their opinion across to others. They were usually well educated men who were also unsatisfied with society in the 1950s post war era and wrote poems to express their ideas. BEAT POETRY:

A very famous poem is America, by Allen Ginsberg. The poem had corresponding themes to Good Fashion as they both opposed materialism and consumerism. Both writers describe society (in the 20 th and 21 st century) and as extremely judgemental where people are being forced/pressured into not speaken their minds. [For example, “I’m sick of your demands”Ginsberg, suggests to the reader that he is tired of being someone he’s not, and he will not tolerate this any longer.]

MAIN IDEA: Sage Francis explores the pressures of society due to consumerism and materialism. Sage uses everyday language (colloquialism) and speaks the truth, whilst accepting he himself isnt perfect either. By writing/speaking like a normal person and by confessing his own faults, it allows others to relate to and understand him easier.
