Intro When you were younger, you probably remember the day your parents took you to a park and let you fly your very own kite. However, have you ever wondered where the kite came from?

When and where was the kite first made and by whom? The kite was first invented about 2,800 years ago in China. It was believed to be invented by famous 5th century BC Chinese philosophers. Their names were Mozi and Lu Ban.

What were kites made out of? The Chinese people had the perfect materials for making kites: silk fabric for sail material; high-tensile-strength silk for flying line; and strong, but light weight, resilient bamboo for frame work. Designs on kites often show fling insects, birds, and other creatures both real and mythical. The finest Chinese kites are made from split, golden bamboo, covered with silk and hand painted. On larger kites there are hinges and latches that allow the kite to be stored or transported. Cheaper, mass-production kites are made from printed polyester instead of silk.

Why were kites built and how are they used today? Back then kites were built for measuring distances, testing the wind, lifting men, signaling, and communication for military operations. Some paper kites were even used to send messages. Now kites are used for kids and adults to fly for fun. Professionals also use kites in big competitions or festivals. On the other hand, big kites are used for things like hang gilding or kite surfing.
