Lecture on eye ball For B.D.S. students only By Prof. Ansari On 11/06/08, 8.30-9.30 am. Wednesday.

The eye ball Objectives Layers of eye ball, Cornea Uveal tract Retina

The eye ball is a special sensory organ for vision and color

The layers of eye ball are Cornea, and sclera. Choroid layer. Retina. Conjunctiva is a mucosal lining the eyeball. Eye lids are the protective coverings, that opens and closes the ocular fissure.

The sclera It is a white opaque layer of tough tissue. The anterior 1/3rd of it is crystalline and transparent , it is called as cornea. The limbus is the margin or corneo-sclera junction. The extra ocular muscles are inserted on to the sclera. Optic nerve emerges out from the posterior aspect of sclera.

Microscopic structure of cornea

The uveal tract The choroid layer The ciliary muscle The iris / pupil. It is the middle layer of the eyeball.

The lens It is a transparent structure, a refractive media, light passes through it and converges on the retina. It is held between ant. & post. Chambers. It develops from surface ectoderm. It becomes opaque in cataract formation.

The retina It is the inner most layer of the eyeball. It is sensory layer. It has ten layers, rods and cones are the receptors for vision and color. The optic nerve comes out from the retina, enters the cranial cavity through the optic canal. Optic disc and fovea centralis are two structures in the retina.
