Multiculturalism and Diversity Success criteria: To understand what the term multiculturalism means and how this effects the UK. Key Words: identity, multicultural community, integration Think about this: What does it mean to be British? Is there a difference between being English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish?

How do British people differ from other people around the world? e.g. France, India, China etc Many people who visit Britain have a very traditional vision of the country. What do foreign tourists visit Britain to see and do? How many of these things have you done? How did we become a multicultural society?

Views about being British …. When I think of what it means to me to be British, I think about - all our sporting achievements (Beijing 2008, Olympic rowing, London 2012), - the music we have shared with the world (The Beatles, Oasis, Cold Play) and the summer music festivals (Glastonbury). - The leadership provided by our politicians (Churchill, Thatcher, Blair, Cameron). - The battles Britain have been involved in (WWII, Iraq, UN peacekeeping troops) - Historical monuments (Stonehenge, Buckingham Palace, Edinburgh Castle) - The laws that ensure men and women are treated equally - Open debate about ideas and beliefs we are each allowed - -

In groups, you are going to create material for a ‘Visit Britain’ campaign. You need: A slogan Images A written article about why to visit Britain A song which would go on a TV advert. After 10 minutes one person from each group is going to swap with another for 5 minutes to share ideas, and then feedback to their own group. You must include things that are “typically” British, and at the same time advertise Britain as a multicultural society. Come to Britain because ….. Britain has many influences ….. Here you will see …..
