Teaching Technique Works for any situation – But critical to use for non-native-language teaching situations Engaged? Daydreaming

Let’s give it a try Break into groups of no more than 4 persons Elect one person and send him/her to the podium (Special instruction to the elected) There will be prizes given – Adult prizes

Pretty Simple Formula Teaching Protocol 1) Break into small groups (3 - 4 persons ea.) 2) Tell audience there will be questions 3) Tell them there will be prizes for correct answers Use the 4-Step Teaching Process A) Present 5 to 10 minutes of material B) Small Group discussion on topic C) Crosscheck for understanding D) Repeat process

Instead what should be done? Keep the lesson short Use lots of visuals – Short u-Tube clips Speak slowly and distinctly Encourage and answer questions Offer rewards unexpectedly and frequently to encourage attention

Did You Get It? Small group discussion. – Give group question or questions to answer --Make sure everyone in your group knows understands the question(s) and the answers

Review Time Discuss and answer: 1) What are the three features of the “Teaching Protocol” 2) Name the steps in the “4-Step Teaching Process” 3) How do the small groups assist learning?

Question 1 Answers Teaching Protocol 1) Break into small groups (3 - 4 persons ea.) 2) Tell audience there will be questions 3) Tell them there will be prizes for correct answers

Question 2 Answers 4-Step Teaching Process A) Present 5 to 10 minutes of material B) Allow Small Group discussion/review C) Crosscheck for understanding D) Repeat process

Question 3 Answers Small group settings are less intimidating Makes it easy for instructor to ID those having problems and thus allows instructor to craft on-the-spot learning remedies before proceeding.

Repeat ‘til Finished Repeat process in 5-10 minute segments until material is covered.
