CANADIAN MENNONITE HEALTH ASSEMBLY October 3, 2014 Spiritual Care and Pastoral Care Similarities & Differences

Approach in SC in the Public Healthcare setting In FH we are multi faith and multi cultural We provide SC to pts, families and staff of all religions We provide SC training for Volunteers of all religions We provide a Sacred Space

We develop a denominational list for the staff to access 24/7 on the intranet We have trained SC Volunteers assigned to wards for two hours a week We receive referrals through meditech, by phone, from Doctors, Nurses, SW, pts. or families

SC Practitioner/Coordinator records their visit on meditech for all staff to read SC Practitioner at ARH provides Memory Teas for staff on the Renal Ward and Community Renal Program SC Practitioner at LMH provides Tea for the Soul, a staff recognition program We provide religious services at ARH

How SC is similar to Faith-based? We provide a sacred space/chapel We provide religious services We have a variety of faiths and religions We provide End-of-Life care Chaplain/SC/Pastors are on call We provide religious literature Chaplains/SCP work closely with SW Staff can share their faith if asked by pt.

How SC is Different from Faith- based. FH generates SC referrals from admitting FH provides SC training for Volunteers FH provides religious services for Moslem, Baha'i as well as RC Mass FH has divided SC in FH Residential Care, Hospice Residences and myself in Acute FH encourages multi faith religious recognition through celebrations & edu.

FH encourages a multi faith list of leaders for the staff to call FH has implemented ACP for renal pts. FH does not have pt. by religion lists for Pastors to find their parishioners FB assesses all pts. for their religious needs

FB hires qualified Chaplains to provide religious care. FB belong to the Denominational Health Assoc. and has freedom to operate within your religious mission statement FB can maintain their beliefs while respecting all religions FB staff can provide spiritual care

Unique Opportunities in Faith- Based Facility Gov’t recognizes FB facility to operate within religious mission statement Gov’t will not interfere with beliefs/values Do not have to provide multi faith religious services or celebrations Could provide literature from various religions in the Chapel Could have a multi faith denominational list

Chaplain could provide in-services for staff to understand boundaries in providing religious care Chaplain could provide in-services on religious groups to educate the staff

The importance of SC in EOL Residents and families need to prepare and cope with the stresses of EOL. (Books) Staff need to deal with their own fear of death and immortality before they can be effective in EOL Staff need to really take time to listen to the residents and families Staff need support from SW and Chaplains

Staff need to be able to recognize spiritual distress Staff need to be creative when families need to arrange a wedding, celebration etc. Staff need a list of Religious/Spiritual Leaders who will come in to support Residents

Spiritual Issues in Faith-based Setting with diverse staff/res. Develop a denomination list to show respect for all religions Be aware of staff and their religious affiliation so you can link them with res. Provide religious literature for residence Encourage other religious leaders to visit Respect all cultures and religions. It is not our role to judge, build relationships

Remember that people are seeking for the truth, meaning and purpose in life The Holy Spirit is the one who convicts as we live out our faith Be prayerfully prepared to give a reason for the hope that is within you Let the fruit of the Holy Spirit flow from you
