2.4 Programmes and Objectives The mission of NKFC is to reduce poverty and dependence through the implementation of projects which meet basic needs through sustainable development. All our programmes are designed after detailed consultation with the local authorities at senior governmental and provincial level, as well as with the villagers themselves. NKFC Teams seek to promote the development of self-reliance in the rural communities. We strongly discourage the villagers from selling the land that they inherited, and encourage them to promote the harmony of traditional rural life. We are guiding them towards using their land resource farming it and setting up their own small income generating business to supply the incessant growth of the tourist industry (2 million recorded in 2006 and a projected 5 million by 2010). We encourage self-supporting groups and assist them in tackling their problems, we lead them to identify the various solutions through their own and their neighbour’s experiences; we encourage them to innovate, update and broaden their capacity and skills. Each year NKFC develops a plan of action to continue the work in support of our overall programmes. NKFC focuses on the following programmes: NKFC focuses on the following programmes:  Agriculture and Animal Husbandry: Developing and improving crops, livestock production.  Water Policy and Maintenance: The team is responsible for distribution and digging wells and latrines after the families received the ten stars program of hygiene from the health care team.  Hygiene and Healthcare: Hygiene programmes, vaccination programmes, malaria reduction, Workshops on basic Healthcare programmes for childbirth, Aids Awareness, Family Planning, assistance for the sick or injured villages and domestic violence victims  Education: Building schools, providing extra educational programmes at the school and to the children in the villages. Literacy classes to adults are offered, training and sponsoring teenagers for vocational schools in Siem Reap, skills training.  Dance School: (sponsored by NKFC France) For 2 years this programme was repeatedly requested. The Chief of Run Teak Commune gave a plot of land for that purpose but later, that land was removed because of a land dispute between the family and the Pagoda concerning its ownership. In order not to delay the programme further, we began in the compound of the NKFC Training Centre in Banteay Srei. Two teachers were selected from Siem Reap; one for the classical dance (Borann) and one for traditional dance (Propeynee). This programme has had a positive impact on the communities, as dance troupes are in increasing demand for the growing tourist industry, it will also raise the profile of Banteay Srei, and help NKFC to consolidate the traditional cultural and moral values in the villagers, since dance in Cambodia is not just a discipline but is also considered as a sacred ritual. A dancer has the obligation to observe their discipline in keeping their body and soul clean at all times. This is also helping to reinforce the NKFC’s Hygiene Programmes and also helps to protect the young against the rampant paedophile tourist industry.
