Chapter Summary Section 1: The Rise of Islam The Muslim religion began with the Prophet Muhammad. The Quran is considered the word of God. All Muslims follow the five pillars or beliefs of the Muslim religion. Section 2: Building a Muslim Empire Following the death of Muhammad there were disputes over his successor. The Umayyad caliphate established itself and grew powerful. It was later replaced by the Abbasids, who established a rich legacy of art and culture.

Chapter Summary (continued) Section 3: Muslim Civilization’s Golden Age The Muslim civilization traded goods and ideas with Asia, Africa, and Europe. Great centers of learning and libraries could be found in many cities. Section 4: India’s Muslim Empires Two Muslim sultanates ruled India, the Delhi sultanate and the Mughal dynasty. At first the Muslims clashed with the Hindus, but the two cultures later blended. 2
