Born in Mecca in western Arabia about 570 Muslims believe he is God’s messenger. Spent much of his life spreading Islam Muslim beliefs One all-powerful, compassionate God Five basic duties, known as the Five Pillars of Islam Quran is final authority on all matters. Islam Spreads Abu Bakr—successor to Muhammad Conquests spread Islam. Abbasid Dynasty moved capital; ruled until 1258 Golden Age of Muslim Civilization Muslim empire united diverse cultures.

Muslim merchants established a vast trading network. Muslims pioneered advances in many fields. Islamic artists developed elaborate mosaics. Muslims in India In the late 1100s, a Muslim sultan defeated Hindus. His successors founded the Delhi Sultanate. Muslims and Hindus Muslim rule led to decline of Buddhism in India. Many Hindus were killed. Mughal India Babur led Turkish and Mongol invaders into India. Ended Delhi Sultanate; set up Mughal Dynasty The Ottoman and Safavid Empires The Ottoman Empire In 1453, Ottomans captured Constantinople. Golden age existed under Suleiman.

The Safavid Empire Muslim dynasty located in present-day Iran. Shah Abbas the Great ruled from 1588 to 1629.
