ICT Implementation Lack of Experience Knowing How Students Learn Content Knowledge

CHALLENGE 1 Lack of Experience

CHALLENGE: lack of experience SHORT TERM SOLUTION: engaging fully with practicum placements. The 3 Prac placements I will experience as part of this course will provide opportunities for actually teaching a class, learning by being immersed in lesson planning and delivery in a real world environment. In my Prac observation days I have already found this experience to be very rewarding. It is useful to observe what the supervising teacher is doing well, and what strategies do not seem to be effective with the students. I am looking forward to being placed in a different school for Prac 2 in order to see how students and teachers in a different school context respond in same and different manners. In addition to this I have been able to secure a holiday job lecturing at UTS (where I studied my undergraduate). The program is to expose year 11 students from key south western Sydney schools, to Uni, who are identified as being at risk of not going to Uni due to equity issues (non English speaking/ first in family to go to uni/ socio economic factors) I have taught at this program previously and found the experience to be very rewarding

CHALLENGE: lack of experience MID TERM SOLUTION: I intend to get my DEC teaching number as soon as possible after my second prac in order to learn from the experience of casual teaching.

CHALLENGE: lack of experience LONG TERM SOLUTION: In the long term I intend to teach at a variety of schools (public and private sector) in order to learn from the different ways in which different school contexts provide for the differing needs of their students.

CHALLENGE 2 ICT Integration

CHALLENGE: ICT Integration SHORT TERM SOLUTION: short term learning in this area will be from Uni Based classes (methods) and from self directed technology learning through tutorial sites such as learnable, where there are free tutorials on how to use various software.

CHALLENGE: ICT Integration MID TERM SOLUTION: In the midterm I expect most learning in this area to be by practicing in the classroom as a casual teacher, investigating what does and does not work.

CHALLENGE: ICT Integration LONG TERM SOLUTION: In the longer term I would expect ICT developments in schools to accelerate and as such I may need to attend some professional development courses in this area to keep up with changing technologies.

CHALLENGE 3 Content Knowledge

What is this fibre? Lets burn it and find out!

CHALLENGE: Content Knowledge SHORT TERM SOLUTION: In the short term I plan to up skill by finding extra curricula means to upgrading my skills and knowledge. One way in which I am doing this is that I have joined the local woodworking guild. In this group there are many very experienced older folks who are more than happy to teach me woodworking skills.

CHALLENGE: Content Knowledge MID TERM SOLUTION: A midterm solution is to engage in events and training opportunities as they arise. In Sydney there is a never ending choice of exhibitions and design events on throughout the year. It may be helpful to visit exhibitions and workshops put on by the Powerhouse museum, Sydney Design week, and the Art Biennale of Sydney as well as other smaller events that may arise in this time.

CHALLENGE: Content Knowledge LONG TERM SOLUTION: In the longer term I plan to become a HSC marker. My supervising teacher at Prac has learnt so many little tips and tricks as a result of HSC marking over the years and I believe this is a great opportunity to learn about the requirements of the course and what students from different schools and backgrounds are engaging in when creating the textiles major work.

CHALLENGE 4 Knowing How Students Learn

CHALLENGE: Knowing How Students Learn SHORT TERM SOLUTION: In the short term I believe Prac will be the best solution to this challenge, with the opportunity to observe and engage with students. Pedagogy based uni classes will also be beneficial in this solution.

CHALLENGE: Content Knowledge MID- LONG TERM SOLUTION: In the mid to long term I expect again to learn by experiencing teaching casually. This will give me the opportunity to meet and network with a range of teachers who will have taught in different contexts. I would hope to learn from the experiences of these teachers to improve my understanding of how students learn.
