I PICK books

When you pick out a book to read, make sure the book is a good fit!

In our classroom we will use the words I PICK to help us select good books.

I PICK I- choose a book. Selecting a book from our classroom library is like picking what pair of shoes to wear for the day. There are a lot of good choices.

I PICK P- Purpose- why do I want to read it? What is my purpose for putting on shoes? What am I doing today? Which shoe should I pick if I am going to go running?

Did you guess the tennis shoe?

I PICK The tennis shoe would be the best match for the purpose of running. When you pick a book think about, what is my purpose today? To learn about something To have fun To practice fluency To practice retelling

I PICK I- Interest- Does the book interest me? If I am picking out what shoes to wear, but I do not like to play soccer. Would I choose to wear soccer shoes?

No!

I PICK When you are selecting a book to read, pick one that is interesting to you.

I PICK C- comprehension- ask, am I understanding what I am reading? When picking out what shoe to wear, would I pick a shoes that is too small or too big?
