The Metric System Objective: Identifying what units are used for different measurements and how to convert measurements.

International System of Units International System of Units (SI) Seven units of measurement known as the basic set which other units are derived from

International System of Units Unit Symbols Symbols used to define a number based on what is being measured Length = meter (m) Mass = kilogram (kg) Force = newton (N) Time = second (s) Area = square meters (m2) Volume = cubic meters (m3) Density = grams per centimeters cubed(g/cm3) Temperature = kelvin (K)

Conversions Temperature Conversion °F to °C = 5/9(°F - 32 °) °C to °F = 9/5(°C) + 32 ° °C to K = °C + 273.16 Example 1: Convert 32 °F to °C. Example 2: Convert 29 °C to K.

Conversions Steps: Find the prefix. (beginning of the word) kilo hecto deka Base Unit deci centi milli Steps: Find the prefix. (beginning of the word) Find out what you are converting to. Count the number of stairs you need to move. What direction did you move in? Move the decimal point the same to same number of stairs and the same direction of motion.

Conversion Example 1: Convert 45 centimeters into meters. kilo hecto deka Base Unit deci centi milli Example 1: Convert 45 centimeters into meters. Example 2: Convert 9 kilometers into decimeters

Calculations Density The amount of mass (g) in a given volume (cm3) of an object Density = mass / volume High Density = Sink Low Density = Float Water has a density of 1g/cm3
