LOTF – PROPAGANDA & POWER

Persuasion Persuasion is the influence of beliefs, attitudes, intentions, motivations, or behaviors. Some examples of persuasion are A waiter at the restaurant asks, 'Is there anything else I can get you?

Propaganda Derogatory information of biased or misleading nature used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view

Examples of Propaganda

Probably every conflict is fought on at least two grounds: the battlefield and the minds of the people via propaganda. The “good guys” and the “bad guys” can often both be guilty of misleading their people with distortions, exaggerations, subjectivity, inaccuracy and even fabrications, in order to receive support and a sense of legitimacy

“We must remember that in time of war what is said on the enemy’s side of the front is always propaganda, and what is said on our side of the front is truth and righteousness, the cause of humanity and a crusade for peace”

The Fine Line What is the fine line between Persuasion & Propaganda? With a partner, brainstorm a list of techniques or devices used by propagandists

Island = Microcosm of the World

Hitler Used slogans to reduce complicated issues in Germany to propagate hatred towards Juden (Jews) and; other minorities Spoken word vs. written word was used to play upon the hope of the “people” tailoring a propaganda message

German Propaganda

Jack – The propagandist Jack is a link to the moral and ‘real life’ connection of the novel with regards to propaganda Jack uses the fear of pain upon the other boys, making certain individuals among the boys entice others

Jack represents and uses the same tactics as world leaders such as Hitler did to recruit help in the form of people Jack conquered most of the island and was about to kill off the goodwill of hope, but there is a slight twist

Which character stands out as the greater propagandist Ralph or Jack? Card Stacking – emphasize one side of a story while repressing the other Repetition – “Kill the Best” Lying – manipulation by way of discourse Testimonial – respected person advocating Target the enemy – turning one side to the other Assertion – Never backing down with claims Comparisons – Embarrassment -
