Propaganda  Name Calling – giving an idea a bad label – is used to make us reject and condemn the idea without examining the evidence.  Glittering Generality – associating something with a “virtue word” (ex. freedom, democracy, motherhood, health, etc.) – is used to make us accept and approve the thing without examining the evidence.  Name Calling – giving an idea a bad label – is used to make us reject and condemn the idea without examining the evidence.  Glittering Generality – associating something with a “virtue word” (ex. freedom, democracy, motherhood, health, etc.) – is used to make us accept and approve the thing without examining the evidence.

The 6th type of Propaganda is… Links a person, idea, or product to a negative symbol.

Name-calling works because if we believe the competition is bad, we can assume this product will be the best choice. Why do you think we see this technique used so often in politics? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaGLeDE- Rwg&index=4&list=PL2Rf1R6EcGZTov9OQUWpwaA7x czA7cXRF

Glittering Generalities Definition: Words that sound attractive or catchy, but really don’t mean anything. logical fallacies These are just: logical fallacies a deceptive, misleading, or false notion or belief What’s a fallacy you ask? Technique # 3 Based on the words used to sell, the customer thinks they are getting something better than what it really might be.

“This new recipe is all natural!” “It’s 100% organic!” Glittering Generalities “Wow, if it’s all natural, it must be really good! You’re Thinking… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ky7ic1Ro9yw

The truth is something that is produced in a chemical factory is often more pure than something from nature. Glittering Generalities Continued… Reasoning “This magazine will make you a leader!” This cosmetic will make you look younger “This car will give you status!” These phrases are only used to enhance the product’s appeal. They’re not really telling you anything specific about the product…it’s just making it sound good.

Propaganda  Transfer – either carries the authority and prestige of something respected and revered over to something else in order to make the latter acceptable, or carries authority and disapproval to cause us to reject and disapprove something.

How are these images examples of Transfer? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfAxUpeVhCg

Propaganda  Card Stacking – involves the selection and use of information in order to give the best or the worst possible case for an idea, program, person, or product.  Band Wagon – has as its theme, “everybody – at least all of us – is doing it”; the propagandist attempts to convince us that all members of a group to which we belong are accepting his program and that we must therefore follow our crowd and “jump on the band wagon.”  Card Stacking – involves the selection and use of information in order to give the best or the worst possible case for an idea, program, person, or product.  Band Wagon – has as its theme, “everybody – at least all of us – is doing it”; the propagandist attempts to convince us that all members of a group to which we belong are accepting his program and that we must therefore follow our crowd and “jump on the band wagon.”

The 1 st type of Propaganda is… Persuading people to do something by letting them know others are doing it. All the cool kids are doing it Everybody has one!

Bandwagon works because it makes you think “everyone is doing it” and you should too. Why is this sign considered BANDWAGON?
