Start of the Project Project carried out within the complusory course APLS under KISK of Masaryk University. Initiation: 10/2009 APLS Team: 7 students of Masters Studies of LIS Supervision: Bc. Jan Zikuška and PhDr. Petr Škyřík Grant: CZK (803.5 EUR) Lenght of the project: 1 year (finally 2years) 3

Target Creation and realization of e-learning course of English for librarians (e-LKA). Participants Librarians working at academic/public libraries with more than inhabitants in The South Moravian Region. Required level of English pre-intermediate 4

Course Creation Survey among librarians (needed topics) Cooperation with professional English teachers (plus 2 teachers in the team) Consultation of subject terminology with foreign libraries 5

Course Creation Course created in Moodle. Audio recorded with native speakers from the UK and the USA. 6

Course Content 9 Units, Each contains: Grammar + Subject Part 1 Unit = 1 Week Section of a Unit: 1) Study Materials (grammar explanation, vocabulary, study animation) 2) Exercises 3) Video 4) Compulsory Task (test or written essay) 7

Course Content Units 1) Introduction 2) Welcome to the library 3) A book 4) In the library 5) A reader 6) Services 7) Technology in the library 8) Library presentation 9) Recapitulation 8

Course Review Participants had to finish a compulsory task in each unit by deadline (9 in total) and pass the final test. We organised 3 face-to-face meetings to support and help participants. Out of 61 partcipants 42 sucessfully passed the course. Enthusiastic replies from participants 9

Experience from the course Librarians are willing and eager to learn. However, we faced some problems: 1) Time-consuming Each lesson takes about 3-4 hours per week 2) Level of motivation Course was offered for free => some students gave up before the 3rd unit 12

Experience from the course 3) Level of English A few participants were real beginners => problem with the speed of the course Some participants were advanced => tried to test and correct us 4) Moodle complications Exercises and correct answers – automation has some drawbacks 13

Course improvements More precise entrance tests 2 weeks per one lesson Special exercises to gain extra points in order to be more motivated New Christmas lesson 14

What is going on now and what will follow 2 nd run of the course October – March rd run of the course March – July 2011 Some creators of the course chose e-LKA as the topis of their diploma thesis 15
