Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 1 QualityTime-ESL A Presentation by Marianne Raynaud Author of “QualityTime-ESL.com” A “digital” resource book for ESL teachers

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 2 QualityTime-ESL A method based on the idea that we learn more and enjoy the learning process more, if effective, efficient techniques are used. If students are bored, even how many hours of teaching are available the results will be disappointing Qualitytime-ESL.com will make all ESL teachers more effective and efficient! Defining QualityTime-ESL

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 3 A Way for Language Teaching to Become more Effective  “One to One” Teaching  “Enhanced” Group Dynamics A Technique Based on 20 years of Research  “How Do We Actually Learn?”  “What Makes as Want to Learn?” What is QualityTime-ESL?

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 4 Main Concepts Increased Individual Speaking Time Time Management (lessons/course) Resource Management Available Tools A Resource Book with Instructions A Document Annex : “ready to go” material (that can be photocopied) Films with students interacting Examples of work done by students Written work PowerPoint Presentations Clips and Films Concepts and Tools of QualityTime-ESL

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 5 Effective learning requires “hands on learning”. To learn to speak a foreign language… you have to practice “speaking” it … as much as you can! As Everyone Knows…

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 6 Now Let’s Do Some Calculating! Traditional Teaching Methods 1. Lecture: The teacher speaks, the students listen 2. Class: The «50-50» Method The teacher asks questions and…the students answer… “ individually” The teacher speaks 50% = 30 minutes The students speak 50% = 30 minutes all together! Calculated “Individual Speaking Time” or “IST”  30 students: 1 mn / student  15 students: 2 mn each!

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 7 Other Considerations! Traditional Teaching Methods Silences, confusion, written exams only reduce “IST” i.e. Individual Speaking Time” Some students will speak more than others In ideal conditions: Still less than 1 minute per student! The ‘Individual Speaking Time” of a 6 year course 1 mn/hour for 90 hours/year = 90 min/year 6 years with 90 min/year = 9 1/2 hours at the most! What level do you reach after only 9 1/2 hours of speaking? Comprehension of some written texts Comprehension of a few oral sentences Ability to say about 10 sentences correctly

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 8 Goal Each student «speaks» 75% of class time during at least 40h/yr Techniques System of Tutorials (individual sessions with the teacher) “Intensive Pair Work” / “Group Work” (3 to 4 students) Means Language Lab (Audio) / “Booklets” for independent work Intranet Site - Laptops -Video projectors Out of Class Communication through an Intranet site QualityTime-ESL

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 9 “One-Person Tutorial” (during the lab) 25 minutes The student is alone with the teacher Oral presentation by the student Teacher listens, corrects and asks «real» questions

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 10 With the “Quality Time” concept all teachers participate in the tutorial system Tutorials for All Students Same requirements for all the students whoever their teacher

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 11 2 students 1 oral presentation Possibilities: Formal presentations Interviews Discussions Or even a combination of the above “ Two-Person Tutorial” (during the lab hour)

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 12 Correcting by the teacher in “Real Time” Corrections given both orally and in writing for the student to work over Tutorials: Advantages (1)

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 13  Students repeat the corrections as they are being given  Later students make written annotations in final reports  Students choose freely the subjects and thus speak passionately about these topics! Tutorials: Advantages (2)

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 14 Oral translations plus exercises Evaluation of each segment in «real time» Advantages: –Pronunciation –Fluency –Stress –All included in the evaluation Oral Exams (during the lab hour)

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 15 « Intensive Pair Work » Students work in pairs The students become the “teachers” The real teacher: Corrects, explains and gives advice… individually! Classroom Work

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 16  Group Work (3 to 4 per group)  The students become the” teachers”  Again the real teacher: Corrects, explains and gives advice… individually or to small groups at a time! Creative Group Work

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 17 What the teacher needs –Basic “Information Technology” tools (Lab, laptop, projector) –An effective teaching method –A motivating evaluation system What the student needs –A teacher who listens, corrects and motivates –Documents to teach and guide him The solution = “The Quality Time Concept” –Creates an atmosphere that will promote verbal communication –Ensures that each student speaks > 80% of class time –Develops self-confidence and strong speaking skills –Stresses: Interactivity, Authenticity and Créativity Meeting the Needs

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 18 With QualityTime-ESL a Multitude of Possibilities!

Marianne RaynaudQualityTime-ESL.com 19 QualityTime-ESL = 45m/hour of Individual Speaking Time –Method Work in a language lab 1 hour per week: IST > 80% Work using “Intensive Pair/Group Work” IST > 70% 80% of all course work devoted to oral activities –Requirements Speaking time of teacher reduced to < 20% Sufficient preparation outside of class by both the teacher and the students Adequate and regular evaluation of student work An intranet site for student / teacher communication A team of motivated teachers Stimulating exercises that can be used with intensive pair work *IST = Individual Speaking Time
