DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT A // APPROVED FOR PUBLIC RELEASE; DISTRIBUTION IS UNLIMITEDSLIDE #: 5 F-35 DOC #: JSF AS BRIEFED: July 2013 F-35 and SBIR F-35 Program Office recognizes importance of SBIR as one of the few directable sources of S&T funds ◦Actively pursues topics with direct relevance to program Participates in both AF and Navy calls Each topic we sponsor has a identified application/ capability gap and usually a prime contractor lined up to support There are very few topics that the JPO can transition directly – we are dependent on relationships with the Contractor community JSF Sponsors Over 30 Topics Per Year!

DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT A // APPROVED FOR PUBLIC RELEASE; DISTRIBUTION IS UNLIMITEDSLIDE #: 6 F-35 DOC #: JSF AS BRIEFED: July 2013 Primary Areas of Technology Interest Affordability, Affordability, Affordability ◦Manufacturing/Production, Certification, O&S Cost Reductions Improvement of Sortie Generation Rates under Expeditionary Conditions ◦Repair materials/methods, prognostics/diagnostics, etc Improvement to Persistence on Target ◦Weight reduction, PTMS system, more efficient subsystems Interoperability and Data Exchange Training Systems “Next Generation” Performance Improvements Even the best technical solution must buy its way on with a business case – think about this throughout the life of your program

DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT A // APPROVED FOR PUBLIC RELEASE; DISTRIBUTION IS UNLIMITEDSLIDE #: 7 F-35 DOC #: JSF AS BRIEFED: July 2013 How to Find F-35 SBIR Opportunities Topic has key words such as “Fifth-Generation Fighter” Supplemental materials identify Ask the TPOC during the communication period who sponsored the topic, and for any recommended POC’s ◦Secondarily…ask the program office Get to know the SBIR POC’s at Primes and the larger OEM’s Topics are published early – you have plenty of time if you start right away

DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT A // APPROVED FOR PUBLIC RELEASE; DISTRIBUTION IS UNLIMITEDSLIDE #: 8 F-35 DOC #: JSF AS BRIEFED: July 2013 The Most Successful SBIR Companies…. Start in the pre-proposal stage gathering requirements and contacting prime contractors/OEM’s – don’t wait! ◦If you haven’t done this already – start NOW! Keep the JPO and Primes/OEM’s aware of their progress (do not rely on Gov’t Program Mgr) for advocacy ◦If you haven’t talked to your sponsor in 6 months – reach out! ◦When are your option decisions due? What is the timeline for Phase II.5, RIF, ManTech, etc? Do not work in a vacuum…the more communication you have the more likely you are to succeed, with the fewest surprises

DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT A // APPROVED FOR PUBLIC RELEASE; DISTRIBUTION IS UNLIMITEDSLIDE #: 9 F-35 DOC #: JSF AS BRIEFED: July 2013 The Most Successful SBIR Companies…. Speak intelligently and accurately in terms of TRL and MRL when reporting progress to the government and to Primes/OEM’s ◦Know the common language Always know what it will take to transition their technology: certification, qualification, testing, etc..and what it will cost, above and beyond SBIR funds ◦This helps you avoid the valley of death – plan and align early Remember that most SBIR’s are technically successful… far fewer can deal successfully with a business case analysis ◦What is the “best value” solution vs “most technically advanced”?

DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT A // APPROVED FOR PUBLIC RELEASE; DISTRIBUTION IS UNLIMITEDSLIDE #: 10 F-35 DOC #: JSF AS BRIEFED: July 2013 F-35 SBIR Successes At least 10 SBIR transitions, including: ◦VRSI: Integrated Duct Robotic Drilling (Northrop Grumman) ◦Creare: Cryogenic Cooling for Titanium Machining (Lockheed Martin) ◦Cuming/Aerobotix/VRSI: Mold In Place (Northrop Grumman & Lockheed Martin) Many, many more are working on successfully completing Phase II’s and enhancements/add-ons ◦Must begin planning for post-Phase II requirements! Looking forward to transitioning many more efforts in the future

DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT A // APPROVED FOR PUBLIC RELEASE; DISTRIBUTION IS UNLIMITEDSLIDE #: 11 F-35 DOC #: JSF AS BRIEFED: July 2013 Summary F-35 is an active, engaged participant in the SBIR Program Each topic we submit has an identified gap/application (ie, transition opportunity!!) – make sure you are aware We are seeking proactive companies to put in proposals on our topics, and work collaboratively to transition Communication with your TPOC, the JPO, and the Prime/OEM is the most important thing you can do Always know your transition path, the requirements to transition, and the implementation business case
