Why did people from Europe come to the Americas?

Religious Divisions cause conflict 1. Religious reasons Protestant Reformation –Divided into many denominations (Lutheran, Calvinists, Baptists, Anglicans, and Quakers)

Spain organizes its American Empire Under Spanish rule, Indians were enslaved and forced in labor encomiendas –Suffered harsh treatment –Tried to convert them

De Soto Explores Florida 1539 de Soto’s conquistadors massacred Indians, burned fields, emptied storehouses, and burned villages.

The French Empire The French establish fur trade Early 1500’s, French explorers were looking for a Northwest passage (water route to Asia through the cold waters of present-day Canada)
