Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz Rent Parties

Gain attention Using colorful animations like this one will pique the students interest.

Inform Learners of Objectives At this stage learners will be informed of what they are expected to know at the end of the unit. In this example the objective is for them to be able to provide answers to questions about rent parties.

Stimulate Recall of Prior Learning Students will be asked to recall prior knowledge of what they learned about this time period in previous lectures.

Present the Content In this module Marian interviews pianist Red Richards about how he got interested in jazz. He reveals he was taken to rent party and describes what they were like.

Provide Learning Guidance Pictures an d music will be used at this stage to aid with learning. Also discussion of other well-known artists, writers, and musicians who contributed during the Harlem Renaissance.

Elicit Performance Students will be give a multi-media presentation of their interpretation of what it was like to be at rent party.

Provide Feedback Watch presentations and give guidance.

Assess Performance Students will be asked to define a rent parties, describe what went on during a rent party, and other specifics that were mentioned in the module.

Enhance Retention and Transfer Students will build on what they learned in this module and apply it to the next module in order to get a complete representation of the period.
