Educational multimedia Multimedia definitions Elements of multimedia Thinking skills and designing multimedia

Multimedia definitions Multimedia is the integration of more than one medium into some form of communication delivered via a computer. Multimedia presentations are engaging because they are multimodal. Multimedia is not a form of instruction to learn from, but rather a tool for constructing and learning with. Learners may create their own multimedia knowledge representations that reflect their own perspectives on or understanding of ideas. Part 1 of 1 … 4

Elements of multimedia Effectively designed learning ‘from’ environments (including multimedia learning environments) include the following four elements: Presentation of information. Guidance about how to proceed. Practice for fluency and retention. Assessment to determine need for remediation and next steps. Part 1 of 1 … 5

Organisation and Representation Skills o Deciding how to segment and sequence information to make it understandable. o Deciding how information will be represented (text, pictures, movies, audio, etc.). Part 1 of 3 … 2

Thinking skills and designing of multimedia o Deciding how the information will be organised (hierarchy, sequence) and how it will be linked. Presentation Skills o Mapping the design onto the presentation and implementing the ideas in multimedia. o Attracting and maintaining the interests of the intended audiences.
