Part 2: Identification and Marking of Commercial Motor Vehicles

Imagine the result Identifying a CMV A weight of ≥10,001 pounds; A truck with a trailer which has an actual combined weight of ≥ 10,001 pounds; A truck with a trailer with a combined GVWR of ≥10,001 pounds (adding the GVWR of the truck to the GVWR of the trailer); and/or A quantity of HazMat requiring placards in accordance with ARCADIS DOT Program for HazMat Shipping and Transportation FMCSA defines a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) as any vehicle that has:

Imagine the result Where Can I Locate Weight Information? Verify GVWR by referring to the specification section in the vehicle owner’s manual; or Refer to the Vehicle Safety Compliance Certification Label -Usually found on the door frame or door on the driver’s side of the vehicle -Usually found near the tongue of trailers

Imagine the result This is a CMV! Truck GVWR 8,800 lbs.+ Trailer GVWR 7,000 lbs. = 15,800 lbs. ≥10,001 lbs Note: Intrastate markings shown for selected states.

Imagine the result This is a CMV! GVWR = 17,500 Pounds ≥ 10,001 Pounds Note: Intrastate markings shown for selected states.

Imagine the result Trailer GVWR? I Can’t Find It on the Trailer! Use this as a guide to see if you need to determine an actual weight at a public scale 325 gallon Water Trailer 3,550 pound GVWR 500 gallon Water Trailer 7,000 pound GVWR 1000 gallon Water Trailer 12,000 pound GVWR 5x8 ft Cargo Trailer 3,550 pound GVWR 6x12 ft Cargo Trailer 7,000 pound GVWR 50x81 inches Utility Trailer 1,300 pound GVWR 61x109 inches Utility Trailer 2,000 pound GVWR

Imagine the result What About CMVs not Operated on Public Roadways? The CMV requirements apply when the vehicle is driven on a public roadway across state lines (interstate) or when driven only within one state (intrastate – state rules may vary) You have to determine if your vehicle is a CMV or a CMV in combination that will be or will have the potential to be operated on a public roadway. Even for only 1 day a year! -If yes, all requirements apply -If no, you do not have to comply with CMV rules -Vehicles still have to be in safe operating condition!

Imagine the result To Belabor the Point… These dump trucks, operated by ARCADIS employees, meet the definition of a CMV because their GVWR is >10,001 pounds. However, they are NOT operated on a public roadway at any time and, therefore, not subject to the ARCADIS DOT Program for CMVs!

Imagine the result What about Construction Equipment Driven on Public Roadways? This front loader is operated by ARCADIS employees who have a reasonable potential to drive this vehicle on a public roadway, but this vehicle is not subject to the ARCADIS DOT Program for CMVs. Equipment not designed to be driven on roadways are NOT required to comply with the ARCADIS DOT Program - ARCADIS still requires them to be maintained in safe operating condition

Imagine the result Does Each Office or Project Have to Apply For a DOT Number? No. There should only be one number for all of ARCADIS. The ARCADIS DOT Number: Some states require a state DOT registration number in addition to the US DOT number. ARCADIS will display the US DOT number. USDOT

Imagine the result How Do I Mark a CMV? Must have “ARCADIS G&M, Inc.” or “ARCADIS” on both sides of the vehicle; Motor Carrier ID# preceded by “USDOT” on both sides of the vehicle: ARCADIS requires owned or leased CMVs to be marked as follows: USDOT

Imagine the result Can I Use Any Number Format I Want? Number requirements are as follows: Letters contrast sharply with background Be easily legible at 50 ft while vehicle is stationary Be maintained May be painted or “sticker type” Information may be displayed using magnet signs

Imagine the result Should I Permanently Mark the CMV? If trucks with trailers meet the requirements of a CMV but the truck is only used intermittently to pull trailers, the magnet sign option should be used -The magnet sign shall be affixed to the vehicle, as described previously, any time the trailer is attached to the vehicle -Spare magnet signs should be carried in the event of loss or damage to signs placed on the vehicle -Magnet signs and other related materials for vehicle marking may be purchased locally or through the ARCADIS safety equipment preferred vendor. Trucks pulling trailers weekly, or a single vehicle that qualifies as a CMV due to its GVWR or permanent HazMat placarding should be permanently marked

Imagine the result What about Rental Trucks Meeting the Definition of a CMV? For rented vehicles, it is recommended the magnet sign option, as described previously, be used to ensure compliance Alternatives do exist for rented vehicles but require extensive requirements beyond the scope of this training - You likely will not want to use the alternative!

Imagine the result What if I Rent a Truck with a DOT Number Already Permanently Marked on the Truck? First, make sure you rent the right truck for your job If the truck has a name and number, place a sign indicating “Operated by ARCADIS, USDOT ” on both sides of the truck - A laminated 8 ½” x11” paper sign taped to the doors is sufficient for short term use Operated By : USDOT
