Marking

Marking Each person who offers a HM for transportation shall mark the package, freight container, and transport vehicle containing the HM in the manner required by this subpart §172.300 Applicability

Marking It is important to understand that it is also the responsibility of the company transporting the packages to ensure that they are properly marked and labeled. The transporter can be held responsible for any violations during transportation, even those that originate with the original shipper. §172.300 Applicability

Basic Markings for Non-Bulk Packagings Proper Shipping Name UN/NA# Ima Shipper 1234 Street City, USA From:

Marking Non-bulk package marking requirements –Proper Shipping Name –ID Number –If an exemption package, must mark it so Example DOT E-11156 §172.301 General Marking Requirements

Marking §172.320 Explosives Hazardous Materials The proper shipping name, ID number and label have to be on the same side of the box

Marking When more than 5 different Class 1 materials are packaged in the same package, the package may be marked with only 5 of the EX-Numbers, National Stock Numbers, Product Codes, or combinations thereof. §172.320(c) Explosives Hazardous Materials

Marking The requirements of this section do not apply if the EX-Number, of each explosive item described under proper shipping description is shown in association with the shipping description required by §172.202(a) §172.320(d) Explosives Hazardous Materials

 Black powder used for pyrotechnics MUST be transported as a 1.1D explosive.  The re-classification to a flammable solid is ONLY when it is used for sporting arms shooting.

Marking Requirements 49 CFR 172.304  Durable, in English and printed or affixed to the surface of a package or on a label, tag, or sign  Displayed on a background of sharply contrasting color  Unobscured by labels or attachments  Located away from any other markings (such as advertisements) that could reduce the effectiveness of the required marking

Explosive Labels §172.400 General labeling requirements For explosives, applies to non- bulk packages

Explosive Labels 1.5 1.4 1.6 BLASTING AGENT EXPLOSIVE D 1 S 1 N 1

Prohibited Labeling  May not label unless the package contains HM  May not label for incorrect HM §172.401

Label Specifications  Except for size and color, the printing, inner border, and symbol on each label must be shown as in §172.411 through §172.448… §172.407(a) -Design

Label Specifications  Each diamond (square-on-point) label prescribed in this subpart must be at least 100mm (3.9 inches) on each side… §172.407(c) -Size

Label Specifications The background color on each label must be as prescribed in §172.411 thru §172.448… §172.407(d) -Color

Explosive Labels  Hazard Class or division numbers must be displayed in the lower corner of the label for both the primary and subsidiary hazards

This label does not fall within the color range for an explosive label.

Make sure that the labels are the of the proper size and design. It is very common in the fireworks industry for the labels to not be the appropriate size and design. This label is not the proper design.

This label is 60MM, labels have to be at least 100MM square.

This package has a label that is to small and the proper shipping name and ID number are not on the same side of the package as the label.

Another example of a label that is not at least 100 MM

An example of an explosive label that is not within the color tolerances of the labeling specifications for explosives.

This label is not a proper label for class 1.3 materials, it is missing the bursting shell.
