Adaptations By Kimiko Shihara Raheem. Adaptation is when an organism must have certain qualities which help them adjust to their environmental conditions.
13.1 Exchange between organisms and their environment.
M – Movement – All living things move, even plants. R – Respiration – Getting energy from food. S – Sensitivity – Detecting changes in the surroundings.

Living in Cold Places Humans are not adapted to living in very cold places. Animals that live in the Arctic and the Antarctic are well-adapted to these.
Adaptations: A body part, body covering, or behavior that helps an organism survive its environment.

Animal Adaptations & Competition WAL: how and why do animals have adaptations? Must Should Could Can you define the term ‘extremeophile’? Can you describe what animals compete for? Can you explain how animals are adapted to certain climates Starter: This three sectioned invertebrate can lift objects up to 100x its own body weight. Can you guess what it is?

Amazing Adaptations

What is an adaptation? Why is it an advantage to have an adaption?

Competition What do animals compete for?

Hot Climate vs Cold Climate Adaptations In your pairs, one person will be HOT CLIMATE ADAPTATIONS and the other person will be COLD CLIMATE ADAPTIONS. The HOT’s will go the left of the room and the COLD’s to the right. You will 3 minutes to memorise the information before returning to your pair. You will then talk to each other in order complete your tables.

Hot versus Cold Adaptations Large surface area to volume ratio to reduce heat loss. Small ears to reduce heat loss. Thick Fur for insulation. Blubber for insulation and to store energy. Small surface area to volume ratio to increase heat loss. Large thin ears to increase heat loss. Thin Fur to increase heat loss. Specially adapted kidney to reduce water loss.

Exam Style Question Describe two features of the white fur of a polar bear (4) Will be peer marked so please make sure its neat!
