Animals Live in Different Places with Adaptations

Adaptation means having certain body parts or behaviors that allow animals to survive in their environments.

An orca whale lives in the ocean and has adapted to live in this environment because of its blubber, or layer of fat, that keeps the whale warm in the cold water.

A brown bear lives in the forest and has adapted to live in this habitat when he hibernates in the winter.

A koala bear lives in a eucalyptus forest and has adapted to live in this environment because its hands have a large gap between the first and second fingers which make gripping branches easy.

The African elephant lives on a savannah and has adapted to this habitat by using its tusks for carrying food as well as protecting itself from predators.

The Gila monster lives in the desert and has adapted to live there by storing fat in its tail. It can go many months without eating because it lives off the fat in its tail.

The polar bear lives near Arctic waters and has adapted to live there by using its big feet as propellers as it swims in the water.

The mountain goat of course lives in the mountain habitat and has adapted to live there because their hind legs have a lot of strength that allow them to jump great distances.

The cottontail rabbit lives in the grassland and has adapted to live there by using its long ears to detect predators.

The gorilla lives in the rainforest and has adapted to live in this environment by having thin fur which keeps it cool.

What would happen if the two animals met? Explain how each animal protect itself if it had to? What helps keep the animals safe from other animals? Could the two survive in the same environment? Why or why not?
