1 Rate of heating and cooling

2 Prepare to Learn – Science in Context
Watch the evaporating the Mediterranean sea video. Why do you think it is important that we understand why evaporation occurs and how we can stop it?

3 Lesson Objectives Know that the rate at which an object transfers energy by heating depends on: - Surface area and volume - The material from which the object is made - The nature of the surface with which the object is in contact. - The temperature difference between the object and its surroundings. Be able to explain the design of devices in terms of energy transfer, e.g. cooling towers. Be able to explain animal adaptations in terms of energy transfer, e.g. relative ear size of animals in cold and warm climates. Explain evaporation and the cooling effect this causes using the kinetic theory.

4 Prepare to Learn - Think Pair Share
What is evaporation and condensation and why does it happen?

5 Use Scientific words to explain why
What factors affect how quickly the washing dries? Use Scientific words to explain why

6 Use Scientific words to explain why
How do cooling towers work? Use Scientific words to explain why

7 Apply Knowledge Cooling by evaporation can make you a little cold. Think of how chilly it can be when you get out of a swimming pool! The fall of temperature due to this effect is called the chill factor. In this investigation, your task is to find out if a wind affects the fall in temperature of a wet object.

8 The Practical

9 What affects rate of heat transfer?
Surface area and volume The material from which the object is made The nature of the surface with which the object is in contact. The temperature difference between the object and its surroundings.

10 Apply Knowledge Complete bump up your grade work sheet. This will be peer marked

11 Review Double Bubble Write main themes in the centre bubble, then related information around the outside
