Young People’s Sexual Health Action Plan Aim: to reduce STIs and unintended teenage conceptions in Cardiff Objectives: 1.Raise awareness of sexual health issues 2.Support the provision of sexual health information to young people 3.Support the provision of quality SRE in schools 4.Support the development of provision of sexual health services for young people in Cardiff, and particularly for vulnerable young people 5.Develop & deliver multi-agency sexual health training

Involving Young People Sex & Relationships work with young people with learning disabilities (Cardiff YMCA & Cardiff People First) Workshop sessions over 8 weeks looking at sex & relationships Production of Sex & Relationships booklet for young people with learning disabilities Young people being trained to be peer mentors Young people presented project to Vale of Glamorgan People First “What we have learnt from these courses will help us go on to have great love-lives in the future!”

‘R U Ready…or not quite yet?’ Delaying sex course developed in 2008 in response to requests from practitioners working with young people “very informative and interesting especially talking about relationships” “good to look at positive relationships – it’s not all about sex!” “I learnt to encourage young people to build on and value their friendships”

SRE Toolkit Partnership project (Newport, Blaenau Gwent, Cardiff, Monmouthshire & Rhondda Cynon Taff) Toolkit provides information on:- –Policy development –SRE programme development –Delivery of SRE –Child protection & the law –Lesson plans & workshop ideas

Cardiff C-Card Scheme Operating in Cardiff since 2004 Offers young people aged free condoms & sexual health advice Operates from youth centres, voluntary organisations and colleges In 2008/09, 940 young people became members (595 male, 345 female) Over 20,000 condoms distributed in 2008/09 Monitoring forms include information on :- –Ethnicity –Disability –Sexuality

Sexual Health Educator Pilot project funded by Cymorth and Cardiff Healthy Schools Scheme from Dec 08 – Dec 09 Sexual Health Educator employed in Integrated Sexual Health Service, works one day per week in Public Health Team Providing tailored SRE lessons in secondary schools “I learnt that before having sex use a condom so there won’t be any infections” “I learnt that we should have sex when we are ready”

Future Working Links with emerging Child Poverty Strategy, Public Health Framework and Wales Sexual Health Strategy Continue to develop sexual health work with vulnerable young people Continue expansion of C-Card Scheme Development of an all-Wales young people’s sexual health website
