Unit Assessment  Assessments can be designed to provide evidence across more than one Unit or Outcome – combined assessments  Flexible and open Evidence Requirements in Units  Greater range of techniques and methodologies for assessment – encouraged through Unit assessment support packages  More opportunities to gather naturally occurring evidence – assessment as part of learning and teaching

Unit Structure Music Technology Units at National 3, National 4 & National 5 Music Technology Skills Understanding 20 th and 21 st Century Music Music Technology in Context

Key points: Music Technology Units  New Units with new approaches to delivery and assessment.  Hierarchical Unit structure that provides progression from National 3 to Higher  Variety of contemporary contexts are covered  Added Value Unit assessment which increases personalisation and choice in the Music Technology assignment at National 4

Unit Specification Music Technology Skills (National 4) Outcome 1 1:1 Selecting and using appropriate audio input devices and sources 1:2 Applying appropriate microphone placement 1:3 Constructing a signal path 1:4 Setting appropriate input gain and monitoring levels

Unit Specification Music Technology Skills (National 4) Outcome 2 2:1 Applying Equalisation 2:2 Apply time domain and other effects 2:3 Apply mixing techniques, including volume and panning 2:4 Editing tracks

Evidence Requirements  Observational evidence supported by candidate log, screen shots, track sheets and/or data files.  Outcome 1 – evidence should demonstrate correct mic placement, signal path, signal to noise ratio ( ie – no distortion )  Outcome 2 – evidence should demonstrate that all features have been used effectively

Unit Specification Understanding 20 th and 21 st Century Music (National 3) Outcome 1 1:1 Describing in simple terms significant genres and styles 1:2 Describing, in simple terms, significant technologies related to 20 th and 21 st Century music

Unit Specifications Understanding 20 th and 21 st Century Music (National 3) Outcome 2 2:1 Identifying straightforward examples of significant genres and their main features 2:2 Identifying straightforward examples of significant relevant musical concepts

Evidence Requirements  Brief reports or presentations on selected genres, styles and technologies  At least two genres and technologies  Description of at least 3 main features of each genre, and technologies relevant to the genre  Listening Tests

Unit Specification Music Technology in Context (National 5) 1:1 using a range of skills in audio capture 1:2 using a range of skills to manipulate audio and sequenced data 1:3 mixing down to an audio master in appropriate file formats

Evidence Requirements Assessment Judgements are based on 1.Observational evidence supported by candidate log, screen shots, track sheets and/or data files 2.Audio master with at least 5 tracks (at least 2 of which have been recorded by mic) 3.Two Contexts required with file format appropriate to the context

Unit Assessment Support Packages - purpose UASPs can be used to: Assess your candidates Adapt for your own assessment programmes Help you develop your own assessments

UASPs – key features  Valid from August 2013  Designed to encourage professional judgement  Provide broad-based tasks – allow assessors to choose appropriate context and forms of evidence  Show range of approaches to generating assessment evidence  Give information on the type of evidence which could be gathered and how this is to be judged against Assessment Standards

National 4 Added Value Unit  Makes the Course more than the sum of its parts  Builds on Unit assessments  Defined as breadth, challenge and/or application as outlined in Building the Curriculum 5  May involve accumulation, assimilation, integration and/or application of skills, knowledge and understanding  Controlled assessment

N4 Added Value Unit: Music Technology Assignment  Agreed between the candidate and assessor  Demonstrates application of musical and technical knowledge and skills Apply technical skills (Skills Unit) Show musical understanding (Understanding Music Unit) Show understanding of context (Context Unit)  Minimum of 4 parts - one of which should involve the use of a microphone  Internally marked pass or fail
